New South Wales State General Election March 2011

This Bulletin is current for Thursday, 3 March 2011.

Australians visiting or residing in China are advised that there will be a State General Election in New South Wales on Saturday 26 March 2011.

The New South Wales Electoral Commission has an iVote system to allow New South Wales residents in China to vote remotely by telephone or Internet.

Additionally, the Australian Embassy in Beijing and the Australian Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) in Shanghai will also offer voting services.

Enrolment
Residents and former residents of NSW are encouraged to first check their enrolment status at www.votensw.info before 7 March 2011.

Voting
Early pre-poll voting is expected to begin from Wednesday 16 March 2011. Enrolled voters in China may choose one of the following ways to vote:

  1. Voters can use the New South Wales Electoral Commission iVote system to conveniently vote remotely by telephone or Internet.
    • You need to pre-register to use this service, and voters will be able to register from 17 February onwards.
    • iVoting is available 24hrs per day until 6:00pm on Friday 25 March. It is NOT available on Election Day, Saturday 26 March 2011.

  2. Voters can vote in-person at the Embassy during business hours, from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Wednesday 16 March until Thursday 24 March. Please note that voting services will NOT be available at the Embassy on weekends or on Friday 25 March or on Election Saturday 26 March 2011. The address of the Embassy is 21 Dongzhimenwai Dajie, Sanlitun, Beijing 100600.

    In Shanghai, voting in person will be available at the Australian Chamber of Commerce (AustCham), from 9:00am to 5:30pm Wednesday 16 March until Thursday 24 March. Voting services will NOT be available on weekends or on Friday 25 March or on Election Saturday 26 March 2011.   3. Voters can apply for a postal vote. Further information regarding postal voting is available from the website http://votensw.info/early_voting/postal. All postal voting papers should be sent directly to the NSW Electoral Commission in Australia, as the Embassy in China has no role in postal voting. Due to slow postal services in many areas in China, those voting by post should apply as soon as possible.
