Australian assistance to China following Qinghai earthquake


Australian Ambassador to China Dr Geoff Raby announced today that Australia will provide $500,000 in emergency relief assistance in response to the earthquake that struck Qinghai province on 14 April 2010.

Official reports indicate that 2,064 people have died, 175 people are missing and more than 12,000 people were injured as a result of the earthquake.

Australia will contribute $250,000 to the Red Cross Society of China through the Australian Red Cross to support local search and rescue teams, medical teams and emergency supplies.

UNICEF will also receive a $250,000 contribution for the provision of medical equipment, children’s clothing, school tents and supplies.
