The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) is the Australian Government’s trade and investment development agency and operates as a statutory agency within the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio.
Austrade’s role is to advance Australia’s international trade and investment interests by providing information, advice and services. Through its global network, Austrade assists Australian companies to succeed in international business, attracts productive foreign direct investment into Australia, and promotes Australia’s education sector internationally.
Specifically, Austrade:
• Assists Australian enterprises to capture increased export and overseas investment opportunities,.
• Attracts productive foreign direct investment (FDI) into Australia.
• Promotes the Australian education sector internationally.
• Assists international buyers to locate and identify the right Australian suppliers.
• Provides advice to the Australian Government on its trade and investment policy agenda.
The Austrade Beijing office has a vacancy for a Business Development Manager at Austrade Overseas Performance Level 2. We are looking for an energetic and motivated marketing professional to join our team. The role will be focused on the mining services and environment sectors. The duties of the position and selection criteria are attached.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Participate in teams (real and virtual) comprising Business Development Managers and Trade Commissioners, to deliver on Austrade objectives in the Mining engineering, technology and services (METS) sector, as well as environment related industries in China.
2. Identify and capture opportunities to develop Australian exports to China and Australia-China two-way investment by providing a range of services that add value to Australian companies.
3. Constantly develop new market contacts and networks, and have an ongoing understanding of the changing nature of the China resources and environmental markets, the range and capabilities of Australian exporters, and the international trade and investment context
4. Provide guidance, insight and advice to Australian companies across the resources and/or environment sectors, as well as other industry sectors as required to enable them to meet their business objectives in China. Support their investment activities in Australia and China. Establish relationships with companies and allies in areas of mutual benefit to Australia.
5. Exercise sound judgement to advance effectively Australian interests in a complex business environment.
6. Efficiently manage a constantly changing workload covering diverse industry sectors, large numbers of clients/customers, within internally and externally driven timeframes.
7. Support and contribute to the planning, coordination and execution of a range of Austrade activities such as business matching, trade displays, investor events and market visits.
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. Demonstrated ability to work well with others; to align short and long term workload with objectives set by managers; and achievement of goals.
2. Ability to work well in a team, showing judgement, independent decision-making, an ability to work unsupervised and ambition to learn more and progress in Austrade.
3. Education background and/or work experience with foreign companies and cultures; knowledge and/or experience in the resources or environment sectors, or international trade and investment would be an advantage.
4. An understanding of Australia’s export and investment capability, export marketing principles, practices and organization, particularly as relevant to the China market.
5. Proven skills working in the China environment; demonstrated networking skills and ability to provide practical advice to business operating within this complex environment.
6. Understanding of the needs and difficulties confronting foreign businesses, in particular, Australian companies, in doing business in China. Demonstrate knowledge of or capability in learning about solutions to overcome these problems to achieve business success.
7. Proven ability to be outcome focused, think and act strategically and be an innovative problem solver, combined with good judgment in the context of working for a foreign government organization.
8. Developed communication skills, with the ability to successfully represent Australia and Austrade and the ability to negotiate and communicate with stakeholders.
9. Fluent in written and spoken English and Mandarin Chinese.
