VACANCY – AMBASSADOR’S INTERPRETOR/ASSISTANT, Level LE 8 or 9
The Australian Embassy is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons (Chinese national only) to fill the position of Ambassador’s Interpreter / Assistant, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The position will be offered at LE8 or LE9 level. Annual remuneration range for this position is from RMB 170,421 to RMB 196,358 (plus. employer social security payments and DSB contributions). The qualities and skills of the successful applicant will determine the actual level and salary of this position.

DUTY STATEMENT
1. Provide high-quality interpretation/translation for Ambassador, senior visitors from Australia (including ministers on occasion) and other Embassy officials as required. Actively maintain and improve level of interpretation and translation proficiency.
2. Set up meetings and programs for the Ambassador, including managing a running program of introductory and ongoing calls. Assist where instructed in arranging meetings for senior Australian visitors and undertake special assignments as instructed by the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission.
3. Provide logistical support for Ambassador’s provincial outreach: organise and coordinate meetings and transport, undertake background research, create a program for Ambassador and accompanying officials.
4. Cultivate a network of contacts in Chinese ministries, official organisations, research institutes etc. Retain corporate memory on contacts through, among other things, ensuring the integrity of the RVU-contacts database, updating CVs, and other supporting material as required.
5. Undertake special research and problem solving tasks as requested by Ambassador and senior Embassy officers.
6. Work closely with Ambassador’s Executive Assistant to ensure the smooth running of the Ambassador’s daily program, including among other things, liaison with Ambassador’s driver and host organisations, and sorting and translating Ambassador’s incoming mail.
SELECTION CRITERIA
A. Tertiary qualifications and superior proficiency (oral and written) in both English and Chinese essential.
B. Superior oral interpretation and written translation skills from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese. Demonstrated ability to independently prepare written material in both Mandarin and English to compile findings in a logical, succinct and persuasive manner. A track record of reporting on international relations and economics an advantage.
C. Demonstrated understanding of China’s political and economic environment and Australia’s interests in the region. A strong background in economics and public policy and/or experience in an international environment or with international issues required.
D. Demonstrated strong ability to plan, organise, schedule, coordinate input from others, and prioritise tasks under pressure, and adhere to tight deadlines with great attention to detail to deliver the required output. The applicant must be able to plan own workloads with minimal supervision. Flexibility, adaptability and initiative.
E. General appreciation of the environment and operational context in which the functions of an Embassy are conducted. Adherence to Australian Government terms and conditions of employment.
F. High degree of profiency in using Microsoft software, particularly Word, Excel, and Access.
G The applicant is required to have a personable manner, a proactive and enthusiastic attitude and be able to work well as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with others on complex issues.
