Citizenship by Descent Checklist
What to do if I am an Australian Citizen and my child was born in P.R. China?
1) Complete Form 118: Application for Registration of Australian Citizenship by Descent (please note from 01 July 2008 only the form version July 2008 is acceptable (07/08))
2) Provide the following documents:
- Citizen Parent's original passport and/or Australian Citizenship certificate.
- Non-citizen parent’s original identity card or passport.
- Original Birth Certificate of child.
- Original Marriage Certificate of parents. If parents are not married, a statement in English about parents’ relationship is required (including when and where parents met, whether parents live together, what parents’ future plans are).
- Passport sized photos of mother, father and child (must be recent).
- Family photos (maximum 5) with mother, father and child.
- Postal address in Chinese and email address if possible.
- Application Fee (also the application fee for any additional child if the application is lodged at the same time).
- Application to be lodged at Australian Consulate-General Guangzhou (Department of Immigration and Citizenship).
- Where the identity declaration Part (Part E, Page 8 of the from) requires that the declarant is Australian, it can actually be a non-Australian as long as they are employed in one of the occupations listed on Page 2 of the form.
It is important to note that if your child acquires Australian citizenship then he or she must enter and depart Australia using an Australian passport. Details on how to obtain an Australian passport can be found at http://www.passports.gov.au or you can visit the Consulate’s DFAT section for advice. Your child will also need to apply with the Chinese authorities for a Chinese visa to remain in or depart China. You should contact your local Public Security Bureau (PSB) in China about this matter.
*Note: At least one of the parents of the child must have been an Australian Citizen at the time of birth of the child.
