The Australian Embassy Beijing seeks applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Senior Social Media/Communications Manager (LE6) with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should address all six (6) of the selection criteria below, clearly outlining their claims and specific experience that makes them suitable for this position (maximum 2 pages). 

  • Marketing/communications qualifications and at least five years’ experience working with online platforms, including social media
  • Demonstrate the ability to create, implement and evaluate social media activities and programs
  • Fluent English and Mandarin language with excellent writing skills
  • Display an in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, and their respective participants (Facebook, Wechat, Weibo and Youku)
  • A team player with the knowledge and confidence to lead and guide other employees
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop marketing promotional materials.

DFAT Public Affairs is responsible for the Australian Embassy, Beijing’s public diplomacy in support of the Australian Government’s policy objectives.  DFAT Public Affairs works with Australian government agencies in China, Australia and in the region to project a positive and balanced image of Australia and its policies.
 

       About the position

Working as a senior member of the team, the Communications Manager will be responsible for the Embassy’s social media profile and marketing materials. This position works under limited supervision to initiate the adoption of new, cutting edge social media platforms to promote Australian Government programs and priorities. The position is also responsible for developing a cohesive marketing portfolio for Embassy events, policy initiatives and cross-government activities.  The position leads a small team and exercise both initiative and judgement in setting priorities and managing workflows.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Design and implement social network strategy, generate inbound traffic to social media platforms
  • Lead the development of an annual public diplomacy strategy and develop, implement and evaluate public diplomacy action plans
  • Develop new social media opportunities including Facebook and youku video magazines
  • Develop a marketing style and ensure a cohesiveness of all Embassy visual materials
  • Create and adapt content for Embassy website, wechat, weibo and all new online platforms
  • Produce a range of marketing materials for the Embassy’s events and activities including banners, posters and brochures.
  • Measure results and analyse effectiveness of social media campaigns
  • Build and maintain internal and external relationships
  • Liaise with DFAT Canberra regarding online protocols
  • Provide guidance and development to junior staff in new technologies to build team capacity
  • Monitor trends in social media tools, applications, channels, design and strategy
  • Assist with identification of problems and opportunities for Australia in the social media landscape and assist to develop strategies to deal with such issues in an effective and timely manner.
  • Seek out opportunities for the Australian Government to profile itself as a leader in social media
  • Address technical issues, at times out of normal business hours.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Marketing/Communications qualifications and at least five years’ experience working with online platforms including social media.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create, implement and evaluate social media activities and programs
  • Native English speaker with excellent writing skills
  • Display an in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, and their respective participants (Facebook, Wechat, Weibo and Youku)
  • A team player with the knowledge and confidence to lead and guide other employees
  • Display an understanding of development of marketing promotional materials.
  • Mandarin language skills are desirable but not essential.
