The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to fill a newly-established position of Manager (Industry, Innovation & Science).  The position will be offered at the LE6 level.  We are looking for candidates who are available to commence in the position as soon as possible. 

Working under limited direction, the position is responsible for managing the work of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science’s locally-engaged team and providing high level research and analysis in support of the engagement between Australia and China on resources, science and innovation issues.  The position will include an external-facing component, representing the department and delivering presentations at meetings and conferences.  Some domestic travel within China is likely to be required.

Chinese language skills and an ability to gain an Australian Government security clearance are desirable.

About the position

Under limited direction, the position is responsible for managing the work of the Department’s locally engaged team and provides high level research and analysis reporting in support of the engagement between Australia and China on resources, science and innovation issues.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the locally-engaged team and ensure high quality support for the work of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and its portfolio agencies in China
  • Contribute to high level strategic planning and risk management for the Department
  • Identify and implement innovations to improve effectiveness and efficiency of processes and activities
  • Research, analyse, report and make recommendations on specialist and complex topics of relevance to the department’s responsibilities
  • Prepare and provide briefing and speeches on specialist areas related to the department’s interests
  • Represent the department and embassy in internal and external meetings, conferences and events, including delivering speeches and presentations
  • Develop and sustain productive working relationships with key Australian and Chinese government agencies and other stakeholders
  • Oversee the support the team provides on administrative matters related to the department’s operations in China

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in one or more related fields
  • Demonstrated understanding or previous experience in one or more of the resources, science and innovation sectors
  • Good judgement informed by excellent understanding of the department’s role and policy priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct high level research, analysis and reporting
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills are essential for this position.  Mandarin language skills are desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team, coordinate tasking and manage resources to produce high-quality outcomes in a busy and varied environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with stakeholders and manage staff.
