VACANCY – Senior Research Officer in Research and Visits Unit, Level 7

The Australian Embassy is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Senior Research Officer in the Research and Visits Unit. The position will be offered at LE7 level.

Duty Statement

Senior Research Officer in the Research and Visits Unit (RVU)
Position No: 5164
Level: LE7

The Senior Research Officer role is an important (non-diplomatic) position that supports the work of the political and economic sections at the Australian Embassy in China. Key elements of the job have been listed below.

  1. Liaise at appropriate levels with Chinese ministries and official organisations, distribute correspondence and information, and make appointments with them as directed by the political and economic sections.
  2. Provide interpretation/translation support for Embassy staff on a wide range of topics of interest to the Australian Government. This will require thorough understanding of complex and technical terminology in a variety of areas.
  3. Using Chinese and English sources, provide research support and prepare reports on matters of interest to the political and economic sections by collecting, analysing and evaluating information on an ongoing basis.
  4. Arrange logistical support for high-level visits, in support of the political and economic teams. This includes, but is not limited to, organising and coordinating meetings, car movements, and creating program booklets. Assistance may also be requested from other agencies or in support of high-level Chinese government visits to Australia.
  5. Provision of administrative and other support as directed, including some support to attached agencies as required.
  6. Relieve other positions in RVU during staff absences.


SELECTION CRITERIA

A. Tertiary qualifications and ability to communicate to a high level (orally and written) in both English and Mandarin essential.

B. Demonstrated ability to undertake interpreting and translation tasks (English-Chinese and Chinese-English).

C. High-level understanding of China’s political and economic environment and Australia’s interests.

D. Well-developed ability to undertake research and produce high-quality and regular analytical reports on issues of interest to the Australian Government, including foreign affairs and trade policy.

E. Strong ability to prioritise a busy workload, work under pressure and to deadlines with great attention to detail. Flexibility, adaptability and initiative.

F. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

G. Superior degree of confidence in using Microsoft software, particularly Word and Excel, databases and internet-based research.
