VACANCY – DFAT Pool Driver, Client Services Team, Consular & Administration Section (LE1)

The Embassy of Australia is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified person to fill the position of full time driver on a permanent basis.  The position will be offered at the LE1 level. 

 

The driver position will work as a member of the Embassy’s team of pool drivers, working with flexible daily hours.  Work hours entail a standard 7.5 hours work each day, five days a week (Monday – Friday), anywhere from 0500 – 0000 hrs, with exact times set by management.  Shift times will vary day by day at management’s discretion, including work during regular business hours if required.  By way of example, the driver may have shifts from 1400 – 2230 hrs, 1200 – 2000 hrs, 1600 – 0000 hrs, 0830 – 1700 hrs, and other varied start/finish times, based on a standard 7.5 hour work day.

Selection Criteria

 

Applicants should address all six (8) of the selection criteria below, clearly outlining their claims and specific experience that makes them suitable for this position (maximum 2 pages). 

 

  • Must hold a current PRC Driver’s License with a clean driving record.  Possession of a current Class A driver’s license is also desirable.  Relevant work experience and a demonstrated record of safe and professional service as a driver or in a related position is also desirable. 

 

  • Ability to pass a basic probity check, including proof/disclosure of driving history, with particular reference to infringements, accidents and disputes.  A proactive nature in maintaining roadworthiness and cleanliness of vehicles. 

 

  • Knowledge of Beijing and surrounds’ roads and road rules, ability to provide safe and on-time driving service to and from a range of locations as directed.

 

  • Good written and spoken Mandarin communication skills, and a basic level of English speaking and reading ability. 

 

  • Honesty and integrity in all aspects of work, with particular focus on matter relating to accidents, matters that have financial implications, maintenance of running sheets, and accountability. 

 

  • Knowledge of the workings of an Embassy, departmental practices and procedures, as well as the Chinese regulatory environment in which the Embassy operates. 

 

  • Effective and contributing team member, ability to work with limited supervision in a small team.  Demonstration of a willing and can-do attitude, and good interpersonal skills.

About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

About the position

 

The Pool Driver will provide a safe, reliable and timely transport for staff and visitors within Beijing and surrounding areas.  The Pool Driver will also assist with some routine administrative tasks.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

 

  • As a member of a pool of Drivers, drive a range of vehicles as and when directed.  Provide professional, on-time and courteous service to a range of passengers.  Maintain an excellent record of safe driving and adherence to all road rules. 

 

  • Ensure the interior and exterior of the primary and otherwise assigned vehicles are kept clean.  Undertake cleaning and vehicle maintenance checks on a weekly basis at a minimum, or more regularly if required. 

 

  • Ensure that vehicles assigned are regularly checked for safety, that fuel, oil and other lubricants, washer fluid and radiator fluid is regularly replenished.  Keep the vehicles’ fuel tanks above one third full at all times.  Ensure that tyre pressure on all rims, including the spare, are maintained at the appropriate level.

 

  • Report any malfunctions, abnormalities, replacement requirements or accidents as soon as possible, so that repairs can be made.  Show honesty, integrity and accountability when handling these and other matters related to Embassy property and finance.  Ensure that all travel and consumables are recorded in motor vehicles mileage sheets in accordance with departmental provisions. 

 

  • Adhere to any instructions issued by the Embassy administration with regard to maintenance of attendance and overtime records and any other instructions issued on any matters which may be relevant to his duties.

 

  • Ensure that all passengers wear safety restraint belts and other equipment appropriately, and that no passenger be permitted to ‘smoke’ in the vehicle.

 

  • Undertake a range of administrative and other tasks as directed by the Client Services or other Embassy staff. 

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Valid driver’s licence with a proven safe driving record.
  • Extensive knowledge of road/traffic systems in Beijing and surrounding regions.
  • Sound English language skills.
  • Ability to work overtime
