Other Family Migration visas include Aged Dependent Relative, Remaining Relative and Carer visas.
The Aged Dependent Relative (Subclass 114) visa is for those applicants who are either never married, widowed, divorced or formally separated and are dependent upon an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. The applicant must be old enough to be granted an old age pension under the Social Security Act 1991.
The Remaining Relative (Subclass 115) visa is for those applicants who are the child or sibling of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, and have no other parent or sibling residing outside Australia.
The Carer (Subclass 116) visa is for those applicants who have a close family relative who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, with a medical condition for which Bupa Medical Visa Services has assessed as being a one which significantly affects them in attending to the practical aspects of their daily life and which will need direct care for at least two years.

The visa application charge (VAC) for Other Family is paid in two instalments:
• the ‘first instalment’ is payable at the time of application and
• the ‘second instalment’ is payable before the visa is granted.
For Carer visas, please note that the second VAC may be waived if payment will cause severe financial hardship to the applicant or the person requiring care.

In addition to payment of the Visa Application Charge, there are a significant number of documentary requirements that need to be met, including lodgement of the relevant application forms, health and character related clearances, and a range of supporting documentation.
Please note that you may be asked to provide further documents or information relating to your particular circumstances after your application has been lodged. In addition to this documentation, further checks, in the form of telephone or face-to-face interviews, and possibly site visits, may be required.
Under Australia’s family migration program, a high priority is given to child and partner applications. Other family applications have a lower processing priority, and you should expect a substantial wait before your application is finalised.
In the other family categories, carer is given priority over aged dependent relative and remaining relative.
Please note that each application presents different issues that can vary the processing time. Some factors that may delay processing beyond the average processing time include:
• An incomplete application being lodged or requested documents not being submitted promptly;
• Additional checks becoming necessary, including additional interviews:
• Medical issues requiring further tests or treatment, such as tuberculosis;
• Any character issues in relation to the applicant that may require a formal character assessment; and
• changes in the circumstances of the applicant.
Our office will contact you in relation to health assessment and Assurance of Support (AOS) at some stage during our processing of your application.
Our office will provide you with information regarding your medical examination requirements. Please ensure you take this information with you to your appointment at the panel hospital.
Assurance of Support (AOS)
AOS is not required for Carer Visa (Subclass 116) applications, but it is a mandatory requirement for all other Other Family Migration visa applications however an AOS bond is only payable for adult applicants). The AOS scheme enables welfare costs for these migrants to be met by an Australian permanent resident or citizen, rather than the Australian community.
An AOS is a legal commitment by a person (not necessarily the sponsor) to repay to the Australian Government certain welfare payments paid to migrants during their respective AOS period. In the case of Other Family Migration, the waiting period is 2 years.
