Vacancy - Public Affairs and Culture Officer (LE4)

 

The Australian Embassy Beijing seeks applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Public Affairs and Culture Officer (LE4) with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Applicants should address all four (4) of the selection criteria below, clearly outlining their claims and specific experience that makes them suitable for this position (maximum 2 pages). 

  • Expertise in social media operation and website management and strong knowledge of the Chinese media and internet environments, including social networking sites and tools, and relevant government regulations, sufficient to provide advice and provide recommendations to post on opportunities to expand our online and social media presence..
  • Expertise in audio recording, video filming and practical skills in post-production software e.g. Final Cut, Adobe Audition etc.
  • Ability to translate accurately and quickly material from English to Chinese and Chinese to English; ability to interpret from English to Chinese and Chinese to English.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills. The ability to work effectively with other members of a team and with colleagues.

About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

 

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

 

About the position

The Public Affairs and Culture Officer manages the Embassy’s website and new media operations and development to project a positive, accurate and contemporary image of Australia to the Chinese public, in line with the priority placed on online and social media outreach in the DFAT Public Diplomacy Strategy.  The Public Affairs and Culture Officer also provides support for major section initiatives and projects, including event management and media management responsibilities.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Research, edit, upload and maintain content on a daily basis for the Embassy’s bilingual websites and other online resources and platforms.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements to the design, layout and creative content of the Embassy’s online resources and platforms.
  • Coordinate website troubleshooting.
  • Monitor and research relevant social media and internet developments, and identify new social media and internet-based tools that may assist China Posts to achieve the public diplomacy program objectives.
  • Research and develop content for China Post’s social media platforms, drawing on information from a range of sources, including government, event and festival websites, and content sourced directly from the section’s internal and external stakeholders.
  • Draft monthly tweet plans and post tweets on behalf of all China posts on a daily basis.
  • Design and produce audio and video content for promotional purposes, including on behalf of internal stakeholders such as the New Colombo Plan Secretariat.
  • Provide Official Photographer/Videographer services for the Embassy for events and official visits
  • Translate relatively complex materials from English to Chinese and Chinese to English in a variety of formats (e.g., media releases, promotional materials, website content, blog and microblog content).
  • Provide occasional interpreting from English to Chinese and Chinese to English for senior Embassy officers and visiting delegations at meetings and media and cultural events.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of media programs and events, including for high level visits (e.g., organisation of press conferences, interviews, media briefings and site visits).
  • Prepare and post media releases and other media materials on the Embassy’s website and social media platforms, provide materials directly to Chinese media contacts.
  • Assist with the management and delivery of Embassy events and cultural programs. 

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Expertise in media and communications.
  • Expertise in website management and design and internet-based systems, including strong technical knowledge of HTML and CSS and experience with Content Management Systems.
  • Strong knowledge of the Chinese media and internet environments, including social networking sites and tools, and relevant government regulations, sufficient to provide advice to Australian institutions and organisations and visiting delegations and to provide recommendations to post and to the Public Diplomacy Branch on opportunities to expand our online and social media presence in China.
  • Expertise in audio recording, video filming and practical skills in post-production software e.g. Final Cut, Adobe Audition etc.
  • Ability to translate accurately and quickly material from English to Chinese and Chinese to English; ability to interpret from English to Chinese and Chinese to English.
  • Ability to contribute to the design and implementation of projects and events.
  • Ability to set priorities and perform under pressure. Attention to detail.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills. The ability to work effectively with other members of a team and with colleagues.
