Ambassador's Speech: SBS Mandarin News Program Launch

(See the video here)

• Hello, I’m Dr Geoff Raby, the Australian Ambassador to China.

• I am honoured to announce the launch of an exciting and innovative information platform by Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service, SBS.

• I congratulate SBS on the launch of their new online Virtual Community Centre for Chinese Australians and the new Mandarin TV News program.

• Both the SBS new Virtual Community Centre and the SBS Mandarin News service provide exceptional resources for Mandarin-speakers in Australia, including the increasing numbers of Australian students of Chinese language and culture.

• This new service is a significant development for SBS’ language programs. It also signifies the long-standing engagement and friendship between the people of Australia and China.

• The Australian Government is committed to deepening and strengthening our cultural connections with China. Last June, we launched Imagine Australia, the Year of Australian Culture in China.

• This is the most significant cultural promotion the Australian Government has ever held in China, thus far bringing over 150 events to over 30 cities in China, attracting widespread public and media attention.

• As our people-to-people ties grow and flourish, it is pleasing to see the launch of these important new SBS services, particularly during the Imagine Australia year.

• I am sure both the SBS Virtual Community Centre and Mandarin News service will be a great success.

• So I urge you all to log on to www.sbs.com.au/Chinese today.

• Thank you very much.
